The ways humans relate, or separate, themselves from nature is a dynamic that is nuanced and holds a long history. Morley begins by citing views of various indigenous groups that held that the natural world and its respective ecosystems were something people couldn't be separated from -- then contrasting them with the colonial views to come, that would introduce a harsh dualism viewing humans as something outside or above the ecosystems they exist in and influence.
